Evaluate (2764)13\left(\dfrac{27}{64}\right)^{\frac{1}{3}}. [2]

A power of 13\frac{1}{3} means the cube root. Write both numbers as cubes:

(2764)13=(3343)13=34\left(\frac{27}{64}\right)^{\frac{1}{3}} = \left(\frac{3^3}{4^3}\right)^{\frac{1}{3}} = \frac{3}{4}

Answer: 34\dfrac{3}{4}

Question 2

Factorise completely pq−3p−q2+3qpq - 3p - q^2 + 3q. [2]

Group the terms in pairs and take out a common factor from each pair:

pq−3p−q2+3q=p(q−3)−q(q−3)=(q−3)(p−q)pq - 3p - q^2 + 3q = p(q - 3) - q(q - 3) = (q - 3)(p - q)

Answer: (q−3)(p−q)(q - 3)(p - q)

Question 3

Simplify 8x+4−3(2x−3)8x + 4 - 3(2x - 3). [2]

8x+4−6x+9=2x+138x + 4 - 6x + 9 = 2x + 13

Answer: 2x+132x + 13

Where marks are lost: writing −3(2x−3)=−6x−9-3(2x - 3) = -6x - 9. A negative times a negative is positive, so the last term is +9+9.

Question 4

Solve the equation 2x2−72=02x^2 - 72 = 0. [2]

2x2=72  ⇒  x2=36  ⇒  x=±62x^2 = 72 \;\Rightarrow\; x^2 = 36 \;\Rightarrow\; x = \pm 6

Answer: x=6x = 6 or x=−6x = -6

Question 5

Shade (P∪Q)′∩R(P \cup Q)' \cap R on the Venn diagram. [2]

(P∪Q)′(P \cup Q)' is everything outside both P and Q. Intersecting with R keeps only the part of R that is outside P and Q:

Venn diagram with sets P, Q and R; only the part of R outside P and Q is shaded

Sketch of the earth showing towns A and B on the 30 degrees west meridian, at 30 degrees south and 30 degrees north

(a) A and B are on the same meridian, one north and one south of the equator, so add the latitudes: 30∘+30∘=60∘30^\circ + 30^\circ = 60^\circ. Along a great circle, 1∘=601^\circ = 60 nm:

distance=60×60=3 600 nm\text{distance} = 60 \times 60 = 3\,600 \text{ nm}

(b) The difference in longitude is 30∘30^\circ, and the earth turns 1∘1^\circ every 4 minutes:

30×4=120 min=2 h30 \times 4 = 120 \text{ min} = 2 \text{ h}

The Prime Meridian is east of B, so its time is ahead: 09 35+2 h=11 3509\,35 + 2\text{ h} = 11\,35.

Answer: (a) 3 600 nm (b) 11 35 hours

relative error=absolute errorn  ⇒  0.2=5n  ⇒  n=50.2=25\text{relative error} = \frac{\text{absolute error}}{n} \;\Rightarrow\; 0.2 = \frac{5}{n} \;\Rightarrow\; n = \frac{5}{0.2} = 25

(b) Percentage error =0.2×100%=20%= 0.2 \times 100\% = 20\%

Answer: (a) n=25n = 25 (b) 20%20\%

Question 13

(a) Triangle ABC is right-angled at B, BCD is a straight line and cos⁡AC^D=−1213\cos A\hat{C}D = -\dfrac{12}{13}. Find sin⁡CA^B\sin C\hat{A}B. [2]
(b) Find ∫(12x3−3x2)dx\displaystyle\int \left(\frac{12}{x^3} - 3x^2\right) dx. [2]

Right-angled triangle ABC with the right angle at B and BC extended to D

(a) Angles ACB and ACD lie on a straight line, so cos⁡AC^B=−cos⁡AC^D=1213\cos A\hat{C}B = -\cos A\hat{C}D = \dfrac{12}{13}. In the right-angled triangle this means BC = 12 and AC = 13 (in proportion), and AB=132−122=5AB = \sqrt{13^2 - 12^2} = 5.

sin⁡CA^B=oppositehypotenuse=BCAC=1213\sin C\hat{A}B = \frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{hypotenuse}} = \frac{BC}{AC} = \frac{12}{13}

(b) Write 12x3\dfrac{12}{x^3} as 12x−312x^{-3} first, then integrate each term:

Answer: (a) 1213\dfrac{12}{13} (b) −6x2−x3+c-\dfrac{6}{x^2} - x^3 + c

Where marks are lost: leaving out ”+ c” in an indefinite integral. It is part of the answer and carries a mark.

Question 14

A, B, C and D lie on a circle with centre O. Angle OBC = 50° and angle OCD = 25°. BT is a tangent to the circle at B. Find angle (a) BDC, [1] (b) BAD, [1] (c) BTD. [2]

Circle with centre O and points A, B, C, D on the circumference; tangent BT; angle OBC is 50 degrees and angle OCD is 25 degrees

(a) OB = OC (radii), so triangle OBC is isosceles and angle OCB = 50°. Then angle BOC =180∘−100∘=80∘= 180^\circ - 100^\circ = 80^\circ.

BD^C=12×80∘=40∘(angle at the centre is twice the angle at the circumference)B\hat{D}C = \tfrac{1}{2} \times 80^\circ = 40^\circ \quad \text{(angle at the centre is twice the angle at the circumference)}

(b) Angle BCD =50∘+25∘=75∘= 50^\circ + 25^\circ = 75^\circ. ABCD is a cyclic quadrilateral, so opposite angles add up to 180°:

BA^D=180∘−75∘=105∘B\hat{A}D = 180^\circ - 75^\circ = 105^\circ

(c) Angle CBT = angle BDC = 40° (alternate segment theorem). D, C and T lie on a straight line, so angle BCT =180∘−75∘=105∘= 180^\circ - 75^\circ = 105^\circ. In triangle BCT:

BT^D=180∘−40∘−105∘=35∘B\hat{T}D = 180^\circ - 40^\circ - 105^\circ = 35^\circ

Answer: (a) 40° (b) 105° (c) 35°

Where marks are lost: giving the angle without the reason. In circle-theorem questions, write the theorem name next to each step.

(a) For similar solids, the volume ratio is the cube of the length ratio:

(y20)3=8 0001 000=8  ⇒  y20=83=2  ⇒  y=40\left(\frac{y}{20}\right)^3 = \frac{8\,000}{1\,000} = 8 \;\Rightarrow\; \frac{y}{20} = \sqrt[3]{8} = 2 \;\Rightarrow\; y = 40

(b) Gradient of AB =6−014−5=23= \dfrac{6 - 0}{14 - 5} = \dfrac{2}{3}. Perpendicular gradients multiply to −1, so the new gradient is −32-\dfrac{3}{2}.

y−9=−32(x−2)  ⇒  y=−32x+12y - 9 = -\frac{3}{2}(x - 2) \;\Rightarrow\; y = -\frac{3}{2}x + 12

Answer: (a) y=40y = 40 (b) y=−32x+12y = -\dfrac{3}{2}x + 12

Sector POQ with centre O, radius 10.5 cm and angle 60 degrees

(a)

Area=60360×227×10.5×10.5=57.75 cm2\text{Area} = \frac{60}{360} \times \frac{22}{7} \times 10.5 \times 10.5 = 57.75 \text{ cm}^2

(b)

Answer: (a) 57.75 cm² (b) (−3, 5)

Question 19

Given f(x)=2x−9f(x) = \dfrac{2}{x - 9} and g(x)=x+5g(x) = x + 5, find (a) f−1(x)f^{-1}(x), [1] (b) fg(x)fg(x), [1] (c) the value of xx for which fg(x)=1fg(x) = 1. [2]

(a) Let y=2x−9y = \dfrac{2}{x - 9} and make xx the subject:

y(x−9)=2  ⇒  xy=2+9y  ⇒  x=2+9yyy(x - 9) = 2 \;\Rightarrow\; xy = 2 + 9y \;\Rightarrow\; x = \frac{2 + 9y}{y}

So f−1(x)=2+9xxf^{-1}(x) = \dfrac{2 + 9x}{x}.

(b) fg(x)fg(x) means “do gg first, then ff”: replace xx in ff with x+5x + 5.

fg(x)=2(x+5)−9=2x−4fg(x) = \frac{2}{(x + 5) - 9} = \frac{2}{x - 4}

(c) 2x−4=1  ⇒  x−4=2  ⇒  x=6\dfrac{2}{x - 4} = 1 \;\Rightarrow\; x - 4 = 2 \;\Rightarrow\; x = 6

Question 20

Angle POQ = 55°, OQ = QP and the bearing of Q from O is 060°. Find the bearing of (a) O from Q, [2] (b) P from Q. [2]

Triangle OQP with north line at O, bearing of Q from O 60 degrees and angle POQ 55 degrees; OQ equals QP

(a) A back bearing differs by 180°: 060∘+180∘=240∘060^\circ + 180^\circ = 240^\circ.

(b) OQ = QP, so triangle OQP is isosceles and angle QPO = angle QOP = 55°. Then angle OQP =180∘−55∘−55∘=70∘= 180^\circ - 55^\circ - 55^\circ = 70^\circ. From Q, P is 70° anticlockwise from the direction of O:

240∘−70∘=170∘240^\circ - 70^\circ = 170^\circ

Answer: (a) 240° (b) 170°

Question 21

Write the four inequalities that define the unshaded region R. [5]

Region R bounded by x = 2, y = 5, y = -1 and a sloping line through (4, 5) and (9, 0)
  • The vertical line x=2x = 2, with R to the right: x≥2x \ge 2
  • The horizontal line y=−1y = -1, with R above it: y≥−1y \ge -1
  • The horizontal line y=5y = 5, with R below it: y≤5y \le 5
  • The sloping line through (4, 5) and (9, 0): gradient =0−59−4=−1= \dfrac{0 - 5}{9 - 4} = -1, and it cuts the yy-axis at 9, so y=−x+9y = -x + 9, that is x+y=9x + y = 9. R is below it: x+y≤9x + y \le 9

Answer: x≥2,y≥−1,y≤5,x+y≤9x \ge 2,\quad y \ge -1,\quad y \le 5,\quad x + y \le 9

Where marks are lost: getting the inequality sign the wrong way round. Test a point inside R, for example (3, 1): 3+1=4≤93 + 1 = 4 \le 9 ✓.

Question 22

(a) Solve 43x=84^{3x} = 8. [2]
(b) The sketch shows the graph of y=(−2x+4)(x+5)y = (-2x + 4)(x + 5), which cuts the xx-axis at A and B. Find (i) the coordinates of A and B, [2] (ii) the maximum value of yy. [2]

Sketch of an upside-down parabola y = (-2x + 4)(x + 5) crossing the x-axis at A and B

(a) Write both sides as powers of 2:

(22)3x=23  ⇒  26x=23  ⇒  6x=3  ⇒  x=12(2^2)^{3x} = 2^3 \;\Rightarrow\; 2^{6x} = 2^3 \;\Rightarrow\; 6x = 3 \;\Rightarrow\; x = \tfrac{1}{2}

(b)(i) At A and B, y=0y = 0: −2x+4=0-2x + 4 = 0 or x+5=0x + 5 = 0, so x=2x = 2 or x=−5x = -5. Answer: A(−5, 0), B(2, 0)

(ii) Expand: y=−2x2−10x+4x+20=−2x2−6x+20y = -2x^2 - 10x + 4x + 20 = -2x^2 - 6x + 20. The turning point is at

x=−b2a=−−62(−2)=−32x = -\frac{b}{2a} = -\frac{-6}{2(-2)} = -\frac{3}{2}

(halfway between −5 and 2). Substitute:

y=−2(94)−6(−32)+20=−4.5+9+20=24.5y = -2\left(\tfrac{9}{4}\right) - 6\left(-\tfrac{3}{2}\right) + 20 = -4.5 + 9 + 20 = 24.5

Answer: maximum value of yy is 24.5

Question 23

(a) a=v−ut=10−08=1.25 m/s2a = \dfrac{v - u}{t} = \dfrac{10 - 0}{8} = 1.25 \text{ m/s}^2

(b) Distance = area under the graph. The shape is a trapezium with parallel sides 60 s and 100 s and height 10 m/s:

12(60+100)×10=800 m\tfrac{1}{2}(60 + 100) \times 10 = 800 \text{ m}

(c) The deceleration lasts 100−68=32100 - 68 = 32 s, so a=−1032=−516 m/s2a = -\dfrac{10}{32} = -\dfrac{5}{16} \text{ m/s}^2. At t=84t = 84 s the particle has been slowing down for 84−68=1684 - 68 = 16 s:
