How to use past papers to improve your marks
Past papers show you how questions are asked, how marks are awarded and where learners usually slip. Used well, they are one of the most effective revision tools. Used badly, by reading the answers without trying the questions first, they give a false sense of progress.
A simple routine
- Revise the topic first. Read the matching lesson or your class notes so the paper tests what you have actually studied.
- Attempt the paper under exam conditions. Set a timer for the real exam length, work without notes, and write your full working.
- Mark it honestly. Compare your work with the answers, give yourself marks only where the working earns them, and note every question where you lost marks.
- Find the pattern. Group your lost marks by topic. Two or three topics usually account for most of them.
- Fix, then retry. Study the weak topics, then attempt similar questions from another year or from the Quiz Bank.
